The Intelligencer & Wheeling News Register reports that shale drillers are considering drilling both the Utica and Marcellus Shales on the same well pad.

The Marcellus Shale reaches down to about 6,000 feet, while the Utica Shale reaches a depth of 12,000 feet. The Marcellus Shale is drilled for wet gas and the Utica Shale contains dry gas. Wet gas is more profitable than dry gas.

Dry methane gas from the Utica Shale can be sold while the Marcellus Shale’s wet gas can be processed and sent to the market.
