Drilling rig’s lone female worker isn’t intimidated

The shale industry is depicted as being male-dominated, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t women who seek positions in the oil field.

The Washington Post talked with Amy Gallagher who works with a gas field services firm in Pennsylvania. After being turned down for multiple jobs, her current boss gave her a shot. She may be the only female laborer on the drilling rig, but that dynamic isn’t slowing her down.

Even though she originally intended to find an administrative position, Gallagher prefers to work on the rig than in an office. She mostly pressure washes equipment and other labor duties, but her job on the rig can vary each day,
