EIA: US natural gas demand increases 43% from 2012 to 2022

U.S. natural gas demand grew by 34.5 billion cubic feet per day from 2012 to 2022, according to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration on Tuesday.
The 43% increase in domestic consumption and gross exports was driven by demand in Louisiana and Texas, which grew by 116% and was largely impacted by increased demand for feedgas for liquified natural gas exports.
Increased natural gas-fired electric power generation was the second most influential factor pushing up demand for natural gas as more coal power plants switched to natural gas and demand for air conditioning rose. From 2012 to 2022, natural gas demand in the Midwest grew by 35% and natural gas demand in the Northeast grew by 36%, driven by natural gas consumption in the electric power sector.
