In a move to stop shale drilling companies’ disposal of waste in ways that impact public and environmental health, a group of environmental groups filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Akron Beacon Journal reports.
The May 4 lawsuit urges EPA to enforce drilling waste disposal rules. The environmental groups, including the Natural Resources Defense Council and Earthworks, believe that disposal rules would lessen the likelihood of earthquakes resulting from injection wells and prevent water contamination from spills and leaks.
According to the source, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Colorado and North Dakota are other states believed by the coalition to be negatively affected by drilling waste disposal.
