Between January and July of this year, the Department of Environmental Protection has increased its shale and conventional oil and gas well inspections by 11.3 percent in Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that this increase in inspections is due to the slowdown in drilling as well as an increase in staffing.
DEP found 205 violations in shale oil and gas wells from January to July. During that same period, 1,552 violations were issued to conventional drillers.
With conventional wells, producers typically do not stress the importance of safety and environmental protection in their regulations. More inspections are required for shale oil and gas wells during the drilling and fracking processes.
