FirstEnergy Corp.’s $40 million transmission substation in Smith Township is now under construction. The initiative is in response to an increased demand for electricity in the area’s Marcellus Shale gas industry, according to the Observer-Reporter.

The project will support two natural gas processing facilities in the Burgettstown area that are expected to use more electricity than about 100,000 homes over the course of a year. It will also benefit more than 40,000 West Penn Power customers in Allegheny and Washington counties by reinforcing the regional transmission system.

Part of the facility is expected to be operational by early December.
