Fossil fuel use reaches lowest level in 30 years during 2020

Fossil fuel consumption reached its lowest level in 30 years in 2020 amid decreased demand due to the COVID-19 pandemic and warmer temperatures, according to Farm and Dairy.

Demand for fossil fuels was impacted on a couple of fronts. The COVID-19 pandemic caused less travel and warmer weather in 2020 decreased demand for heating fuel.

However, oil, gas and coal still accounted for 79% of total U.S. energy consumption, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Renewables and nuclear accounted for the remaining 21%, its highest share since the early 1900s.
