Harrison County putting increased tax receipts to use

Last month, Harrison County received the most new drilling permits out of all other Ohio counties. This boom in shale gas production has contributed to an increase in the county’s sale tax receipts over the past few years, according to Columbus Business First.

For the past 30 years or so, Harrison County saw little activity in terms of sales tax receipts. Monthly receipts totaled $80,000 to $100,000 in 2009 and previous years. Now, $450,000 is the average monthly receipt.

The influx in tax money has been used for upgrading and fixing various structures that couldn’t be tended to in the past because of a lack of funds, but it still isn’t enough. If drilling and production slow down along with falling oil prices, Harrison County could face some more difficulties.
