The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is beefing up its program to plug abandoned oil and gas wells, following the passing of House Bill 225, according to the Canton Repository.
Since the new law took effect in late September, lawmakers have more than doubled the program’s budget to $15 million. The additional funding has allowed the program to put together a robust plugging plan.
The ODNR plans to plug 173 wells this fiscal year and has entered contracts on 55 of those at a cost of $3.6 million.
