According to Pittsburgh Post-Gazette PowerSource, businesses such as hotels and restaurants started as a result of the Marcellus and Utica Shale gas boom are subject to employment audits by the federal government.
In West Virginia and southwestern Pennsylvania, the U.S. Department of Labor has audited more than 395 companies since 2012. Fifteen of those companies owe more than $100,000 in back wages, civil penalties and liquidated damages. Two companies owe more than $1 million.
Typically, when the Department of Labor identifies employment violations, companies will change their practices to correctly compensate employees for overtime. However, the same violations that occurred several years ago are still happening with companies today.
