The United States is closing on Australia and Qatar as the world’s largest natural gas exporter, according to a recent report by the International Energy Agency.
At its current pace, the U.S. will challenge the world leaders as the top gas exporter by 2022, according to CNBC. Global gas demand is expected to grow by 1.6 percent a year for the next five years, with consumption on pace to near 4,000 billion cubic meters.
The U.S. is already the world’s largest producer of natural gas, and the IEA estimates its production will be up to 890 bcm by 2022, making up more than a fifth of global gas output.
