Federal officials have decided to lease even more of Wayne National Forest, announcing 1,200 acres of the forest’s Marietta Unit in southeast Ohio will be sold online in March, according to The Columbus Dispatch.
The Bureau of Land Management accumulated more than $1.7 million after auctioning over 700 acres in December. The agency intended to include more land, but withdrew several parcels due to ownership questions. The March 23 sale consists of seven of those parcels.
The oil and gas leases granted could introduce Ohio’s lone national forest to fracking. Environmental advocates plan to continue battling the auctions.
