Pittsburgh Post-Gazette PowerSource reports that the first liquified natural gas export facility in the lower 48 states will begin shipments from the U.S. Gulf Coast before the end of the year.

The Sabine Pass LNG terminal will be able to ship about 4.5 million tonnes per year. Cheniere Energy, based in Houston, is the terminal’s first mover.

The current top two destinations for LNG are Japan and South Korea. China is next; the country imported 20 million tonnes of LNG last year. China is expected to import 17 percent more LNG between 2015 and 2020, pushing the country past South Korea where growth has slowed.
