Locations of old wells necessary for new drillers

The Pittsburgh Post Gazette PowerSource reports that the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is working to document abandoned oil and gas wells.

The DEP is consulting maps from the early 1900s that show where wells were once drilled. However, there are thought to be many unknown wells that were never documented on the maps.

Knowledge about old wells is crucial as new ones are drilled because of potential problems such as air and water pollution, methane leaks and electrical problems.

The DEP is also compiling the maps for drillers to use as a resource when drilling locations are being considered.

From The Pittsburgh Post Gazette PowerSource:

“The mapping project has new urgency because proposed state regulations call for drilling companies to identify and monitor abandoned wells around their operations before and during hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.”
