In Pennsylvania, Marcellus shale drillers are given nine months to restore well sites to their original condition — or as close to it as possible. But Pittsburgh Post-Gazette PowerSource reports that many companies are asking for more time.
The state Department of Environmental Protection has cited companies, including Range Resources, EQT Corp. and Chesapeake Energy Corp., for not having well sites restored, as well as companies that self-reported well sites that were out of compliance.
When the DEP decided on its oil and gas regulations (Chapter 78), it allowed companies an additional two years to restore well sites for certain conditions, such as an increase in reuse of water or less earth disturbance.
