Pittsburgh Business Times reports that Marcellus Shale Coalition has criticized a recent study conducted by researchers from University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public School.
The study concluded that women living near natural gas wells were more likely to have babies with low birth weights than women who don’t live near gas wells. The study was conducted in the southwestern Pennsylvania counties of Butler, Westmoreland and Washington. Data was compiled between 2007 and 2010.
Marcellus Shale Coalition, based in Robinson Township, refutes that conclusion, stating that the study’s results are skewed. The group states that the study has no regard for universally-accepted medical definitions, doesn’t establish previous research trends and admits absence of critical data and factors, among other faults.
