In the past four years, natural gas production from the Marcellus and Utica shale in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia has accounted for 85 percent of the country’s shale growth, Akron Beacon Journal reports.
From 2010 through early 2016, 28,854 drilling permits have been issued in the three-state Appalachian Basin. Out of those permits, 9,955 wells are in production.
According to the source, Ohio lags behind Pennsylvania and West Virginia in drilling development. The bulk of Marcellus drilling has been done in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, while most of the Utica drilling has occurred in Ohio so far.
