Chicago-based Invenergy LLC has proposed a 550-megawatt natural gas power plant on property in Elizabeth Township, Allegheny County, that was once an industrial landfill. The location is currently zoned as residential.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette PowerSource reports that residents voiced their opinions of the power plant at a town hall meeting last week. In the 1970s and 1980s, the owner of the dump on the property in question accepted coal sludge and demolition waste before it was found that waste was illegally handled at the site.
According to the newspaper, memories of the landfill’s pollution influenced opinions of the proposed power plant. Nearby residents voiced concerns of the plant’s noise as well as its appearance.
