Northeast Ohio residents consider drafting bills of rights to stop shale drillers

Residents in several Ohio towns have been unsuccessful in their attempts to ban fracking in their communities. According to The Plain Dealer, activists in the North Royalton area attended a drilling forum April 28, organized by the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Democratic Club, where residents voiced their opinions about the future of drilling in their communities.

Many residents want to pursue a bill of rights that would prevent more wells from being drilled. Currently, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources is the only entity in the state to permit and regulate shale oil and gas wells. In March, the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas struck down a 2012 ruling that banned drilling in Broadview Heights.

The newspaper reports that Tish O’Dell, the leader of Mothers Against Drilling in our Neighborhoods, believes that if enough communities develop bills of rights, the state will reconsider ODNR’s authority.
