Numbers don’t add up for disposed fracking waste

The Pittsburgh Post Gazette PowerSource reports that conflicting records of drill cutting and fracking waste fluid amounts disposed of at Pennsylvania landfills have surfaced.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection recently discovered that oil and gas companies under-reported the amounts of waste disposed of at landfills in 2013. One company in particular, EQT Corp., has the most striking difference in amounts reported versus the DEP’s records. The landfill received around 95,000 tons of drill cuttings and fracking waste fluids, while EQT Corp. reported to the DEP that they disposed of only 21 tons.

Oil and gas companies must complete paperwork for each landfill that is taking the waste. In turn, landfills complete paperwork for the DEP to document how much waste has been disposed of by each company.

From The Pittsburgh Post Gazette PowerSource:

“Spotting inconsistencies in the amount of waste at landfills is difficult for several reasons, the main one being that drilling operators report their waste electronically and the data are stored in a publicly accessible database on the DEP’s website. Landfills, on the other hand, send paper copies of spreadsheets that are stored in binders at regional DEP offices.”
