Midway through November, President Barack Obama issued a rule to limit oil companies that burn off natural gas on public lands, according to the Associated Press.
Energy companies frequently burn off — flare — natural gas at drilling sites because it costs less than oil. According to a government report, about 40 percent of the flared gas could be captured and sold.
The new regulation was put in place to reduce waste and harmful methane emissions from this practice.
However, Congressional Republicans are set on overturning the rule, reasoning that it will drive away jobs from federal lands in the West.
