Closing 2016 with a final move to protect two areas rich in Native American artifacts, President Barack Obama designated over 1.6 million acres of federal land in Utah and Nevada as national monuments, according to Reuters.
Obama sited the 1906 Antiquities Act to turn 1.35 million acres at Bear Ears in Utah and 300,000 acres at Gold Butte outside of Las Vegas, Nevada, into national monuments. It will be difficult for President-elect Donald Trump to reverse.
According to the White House, Obama has used the Antiquities Act and other measures to protect more land and water than any prior administration.
The larger of the two regions, Bear Ears, is home to Hopi, Navajo, Ute Indian Tribe, Ute Mountain Ute and Zuni. The various tribal leaders welcomed the announcement as Bear Ears contains many Native American sacred sites, rock art, ancient cliff dwellings and other areas of cultural significance.
