Democrats and Republicans in the Ohio General Assembly agreed March 17 that fracking should be banned in state parks, The Columbus Dispatch reports.
A week earlier, House Republicans unanimously opposed a similar fracking ban at parks. This time, the Republicans unanimously supported the amendment, which banned fracking on the surface of state forests but allowed fracking on state wildlife areas.
Sean O’Brien, a Democrat from Brookfield, said that the compromise between the parties will protect the parks and will be in the best interest of Ohioans.
The House is expected to approve the issue.
In 2011, Ohio Gov. John Kasich signed a bill that allowed fracking on public lands. The Oil and Gas Commission was subsequently formed, which was tasked with approving drillers, determining potential impact on visitors to public lands and considering public input.
