Pennsylvania state officials gathered on Wednesday morning for the groundbreaking of the Sunbury pipeline. Being built by UGI Energy Services, the 20-inch pipeline will deliver Marcellus Shale gas to a power plant in Synder County, according to State Impact.

The pipeline will span 35 miles, stretching from Lycoming County to feed into the Hummel Station power plant, which is being constructed on the former Sunbury coal plant. It is expected to be finished by the end of this year and projected to come online in early 2018.

The project is part of an ongoing national trend to phase coal out in exchange for natural gas in electric power generation. The Hummel Station power plant will power approximately 1 million homes.
