Pittsburgh Post-Gazette PowerSource reports that the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has released revised rules that will affect large scale operations as well as smaller, shallow conventional oil and gas well operations in the state.
The DEP advisory board, which met March 26, is made up of five industry technical experts as well as four nonvoting members who represent the public interest. Pennsylvania’s legacy drilling representatives questioned when the new rules would apply to conventional drilling operations, if at all. Although conventional shallow drillers stated that their operations don’t impact the environment, the DEP disagreed. Conventional oil and gas drillers feel that their input concerning the new rules has been ignored.
The DEP received opinions from citizens, industry leaders and environmental groups before revising the proposal draft.
