At the beginning of the month, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection proposed more than doubling the application fee required for new hydraulic fracturing oil and gas wells, according to Law360.

If the new regulations are adopted, they would increase the application fee from $4,200 for vertical unconventional wells and $5,000 for horizontal unconventional wells to a $12,500 fee for both types. The increase would apply only to unconventional wells.

The DEP says the increased fee is necessary to continue funding the state’s well-plugging fund.
