While crews work to clear trees for pipelines, some landowners protest by sitting in trees.
StateImpact Pennsylvania says that Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, residents Ellen and Elise Gerhart have taken to tree-sitting, even at the risk of arrest, to try to stop Sunoco Logistics from building its Mariner East 2 pipeline. They don’t believe that pipeline companies should have eminent domain rights.
The source reports that a Huntingdon County judge gave Sunoco until March 31 to clear the trees for the pipeline to avoid the risk of harming the endangered Indiana bat. However, Sunoco worked with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to finish cutting down the trees a week later.
The Mariner East 2 pipeline will carry natural gas liquids, including ethane, butane and propane, across Pennsylvania to the Marcus Hook where the NGLs will be processed and refined.
