Shale gas production hits record high in Appalachian Basin

During the first half of this year, the Appalachian Basin recorded record shale natural gas production, according to the Energy Information Administration.

The Utica and Marcellus shales averaged 31.9 billion cubic feet (bcf) per day from January to June. The average is the highest for a six-month period since production began in 2008.

The EIA credits the increased production at least in part to growth in pipeline capacity. Total pipeline takeaway capacity from the northeast increased from 4.5 bcf/d to 24.5 bcf/d from 2008 to 2020.
