Stark State is getting a new $1.3 million ShaleNET well site training lab in downtown Canton. The site will be ready by fall 2014. Trustees approved final plans for the training lab at an Oct. 16 meeting.
The 7,000-square-foot building will house an indoor/outdoor well site trainer and lease operator lab.
According to Kathleen Steere, coordinator of oil and gas programs, equipment will include:
Pump jack/well head
A gas production unit
Stock tanks
Natural gas compressor
Meter run/meter shed
As demand grows for the training, additional equipment will be added.
The program could boost Ohio’s capability of providing shale gas drillers with trained, local, employees.
Some have criticized the industry for not hiring more local workers. But as Ohio trains more workers for shale gas jobs, those criticisms should subside.
In March, the Pittsburgh Tribune reported that roughly 234,000 jobs were created by the oil and gas industry in Pennsylvania. Of those jobs created, it’s estimated that 93 percent of recent hires were from Pennsylvania.
