Researchers from the University of Texas-Austin speculate that over the past 40 years, 9 out of 10 earthquakes that occurred in Texas were caused by oil and gas activity.
Between 1975 and 2015, 162 earthquakes of at least a 3.0 magnitude were recorded in Texas, Forbes reports. The researchers speculate that about 25 percent of those are “almost certainly” believed to be caused by oil and gas, and an additional 33 percent are thought to have “probably” been caused by oil and gas activity. Adding to that, 28 percent of the earthquakes were “possibly” induced by oil and gas activity.
According to the source, the study will be published in the journal Seismological Research Letters.
