Reuters reports that as many as 5.7 million students attend school in the ‘blast zone’ of trains carrying crude oil, prompting environmental group ForestEthics to ask for a halt on oil train travel.
Nearly 15,000 schools are located within the one mile area of railroad tracks that has to be evacuated in the event of a train crash, according to U.S. Department of Transportation data and regulations.
ForestEthics wants stricter rules for crude oil transportation to be put in place before trains can carry the volatile material by rail.
