Last week U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Andrew Wheeler announced the rollback of Obama-era rules to limit methane gas emissions from oil and natural gas wells, pipelines and other facilities, according to Kallanish Energy.

The announcement was made in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — a key state in the 2020 presidential election and a strong drilling state with the Marcellus Shale and natural gas.

The 2016 federal methane rules affected by the change include methane limits for new and modified oil and gas infrastructure, restricted emissions of other air pollutants including volatile organic compounds and instituted regular monitoring and leak repair requirements

The new rules remove requirements to control methane across the oil and gas industry including wells and pipelines.
