U.S. Energy Information Administration reports that in recent years, domestic oil production has been mostly light crude. From 2011 to 2014, about 90 percent of 3 million barrels per day growth in production was light crude.
Light crude oil has a sulphur content of 0.3 percent or less and an API gravity (an inverse measure of the relative density of petroleum liquid and water’s density).
For 2015 and 2016, there has been continued production growth, but at a slower rate than 2013 and 2014. U.S. Energy Information Administration states that U.S. oil production is expected to reach 9.2 million barrels per day in 2016.
