The U.S. oil and gas rig count fell to 706 during the week ended Dec. 30, shedding 13 rigs, according to Enverus.
The drop in the total rig count was fueled by changes in crude plays where rigs dropped by 14 to 552 on the week. Simultaneously, the natural gas rig count rose by one to 168.
The Permian Basin recorded the biggest decline of any of the eight largest domestic plays, losing five rigs to total 300. The Marcellus and Utica shale plays saw no changes with 37 and 10 rigs, respectively.
