Utica and Marcellus shale gas drilling permits continue to increase, while more drilled wells are in production, according to Farm and Dairy.

Between Nov. 1 and Dec. 16, 2016, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection issued 179 horizontal drilling permits. Likewise, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources granted 35 Utica/Point Pleasant Shale well drilling permits in November and eight in December.

The largest increases were seen in Washington County, Pennsylvania, with 42 permits — double the number of permits issues in September and October — and Monroe County, Ohio, with 14 new permits.

West Virginia experienced slightly smaller increases in the shale plays with only eight new permits issued.
