The number of oil and gas rigs operating in Ohio’s Utica Shale stood at 18 last week, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

The ODNR reported Chesapeake Exploration LLC secured three permits for horizontal wells in Harrison County, while Eclipse Resources I LP received four permits for wells in Monroe County during the week ended Nov. 17. All of the permits were issued in what is considered the “hot spot” of the oil and gas play in the state’s southeastern quadrant.

To date, the ODNR has issued 2,924 permits in Ohio’s Utica, energy companies have drilled 2,457 wells and 2,081 of those are in production.

I don’t understand…you report 18 operating Ohio wells in the header, then state there are 2,081 wells producing in Ohio?

    • Sara Welch says:

Good question! There are 18 operating rigs, which means a structure with equipment for drilling and servicing an oil/gas well. The wells in production are already drilled and in service. I hope that helps.

The “Marcellus and Utica Shale Well” map on this page is quite out of date. There are at least two well pads, with both producing and permitted wells on each, between Bowerston and Conotton in Harrison County Ohio. I keep checking the map now that the drilling rig is back on the one at the corner of twp 215 and cr 43, but nothing shows in that region of the map at all. Some of those Bowerston wells have been producing for several years now.

Thank you for your feedback. We are currently in the process of combining data for both the Marcellus and Utica shale plays in Ohio and Pennsylvania to generate a new map. It should be completed and up on the website before the end of the year.
