As the oil and gas industry continues to recover, it struggles to find qualified workers who can pass a drug test, according to The Canton Repository.
Stark State College’s Oil & Gas program has struggled to recruit high school students, despite offering scholarships and the availability of jobs that pay around $20 an hour after graduation.
In the next 18 months, workforce demand will skyrocket with companies like Ascent, Halliburton, Marathon Petroleum and Momentum hiring workers, according to Dan Schweitzer, the director of the Oil & Gas and Environmental Technologies programs at Stark State. However, a lack of workers may affect the region’s ability to attract large projects and complete large interstate pipelines.
