Wastewater pipelines are allowed to be buried according to Pennsylvania DEP

There’s more to drilling an oil or gas well than just the well itself. A network of gathering lines, pipelines and storage facilities linked to wells move fluids during drilling and fracking.

In western Pennsylvania, aboveground wastewater pipelines have concerned landowners and farmers, but an edit in the language by Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection allows for these lines to be buried. Only temporary lines that serve one well at a time have to be installed above ground, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette PowerSource reports.

The buried pipelines can be used for multiple wells over time, and they are conducive in areas where above ground pipelines would be in the way of truck traffic.
