The state has recommended the Wellsville Intermodal Facility to be one of the nation’s Opportunity Zones, according to The Youngstown Business Journal.

Opportunity Zones are part of a community development program that Congress created in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act in 2017 to encourage long-term investments in low-income and rural communities across the country.

Columbiana County Port Authority Executive Director Penny Traina said that the Wellsville facility, located along the Ohio River, is “extremely well-positioned” for development with the Royal Dutch Shell’s ethane “cracker” plant under construction in Monaca, Pennsylvania and PTT Global Chemical ’s proposed cracker plant project in Belmont County, Ohio.
