Wind outpaces natural gas in new electric power generating capacity in 2019

Wind, natural gas and solar added a combined 22.7 GW of new electric power generating capacity in 2019, with wind power leading the way in new additions with 9,100 MW, according to a new report by the federal Energy Information Administration.

Following wind, natural gas was second with 8,300 MW of newly installed capacity and solar photovoltaic was third with 5,300 MW in new installations during 2019.

Simultaneously, nearly 14,000 MW of coal-fired capacity was retired last year. The Midwest was the only region where coal was the most used electricity resource in 2019.
