The wastewater injection well that triggered seismic activity in the Mahoning Valley six years ago is scheduled to be closed for good, according to the Youngstown Business Journal.
On April 6, North Star Disposal Services LLC filed an application to formally plug and abandon the closed Northstar #1 disposal well. It is currently under review by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Oil and Gas Division.
After injection began at the well in 2011, a series of earthquakes rippled through the Mahoning Valley, including one that reached 4.0 on the Richter scale that New Year’s Eve.
