In his budget, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf is proposing a 6.5 percent severance tax on oil and gas drillers in the state’s Marcellus shale. Wolf estimates that this tax would generate $217.8 million for the 2016-2017 fiscal year.
StateImpact Pennsylvania reports that House Majority Leader Dave Reed, R-Indiana, argues that the severance tax revenue won’t generate enough money to balance the budget because of low natural gas prices, which have caused production to drop.
Last year, Wolf’s proposed severance tax was defeated. According to the source, Pennsylvania is the only state that doesn’t have a natural gas severance tax.
