Pennsylvania state officials will work to reduce methane emissions from shale gas wells under Gov. Tom Wolf’s four-part plan introduced Jan. 19.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette PowerSource reports that the plan calls for new permits for shale gas well sites and compressor station sites, as well as regulations and best practices aimed at managing and reducing leaks at facilities and on pipelines. Currently, the state handles methane leaks at processing facilities and compressor stations by requiring emissions controls, leak detection and repair programs.
According to the newspaper, 25 percent of U.S. methane emissions are from the oil and gas industry.<
