Waterless fracking tabled by STEP Energy

Waterless fracking was tested in an effort to reduce the millions of gallons of water used to hydraulically fracture a shale well. In Ohio, this method has been tabled, Columbus Business First reports.

In March 2015, STEP Energy acquired GasFrac Energy Services, Inc.’s assets. STEP, an energy services company, believes that waterless fracking has a place in the shale industry, but has decided to not pursue it now.

In Ohio’s Utica Shale, Chesapeake Energy and EV Energy Partners partnered with GasFrac for waterless fracking test wells. The Tuscarawas County test well ended up costing $22 million and its preliminary results were significantly less than a nearby well that was fracked with water.
