Recent research revealed that the Utica Shale potentially contains more natural gas and oil than previously thought, but researchers have also discovered other facets about the play.

News and Sentinel reports that the preferred drilling location for the Utica Shale is actually an area of the Point Pleasant Formation, which underlies the Utica. The most productive source rocks are located in the Point Pleasant and portions of the Lexington/Trenton Formation.

Organized by West Virginia University, the study’s consortium had goals of assessing the rock of the Utica and similar plays, defining oil and gas fairways in the Utica and assessing the play’s resources.
