Ohio power plant to keep burning coal instead of switching to natural gas

According to The Plain Dealer, NRG Energy is going to continue powering its Avon Lake plant with coal, despite plans to transition the facility to natural gas. Natural gas burns cleaner than coal.

The planned switch was intended to satisfy new pollution standards. However, the company will add new pollution controls next year to meet federal rules for limiting toxic metals like mercury from the plant’s boilers.

Switching the plant to natural gas would have required the construction of a gas pipeline from Grafton, Ohio, in southern Lorain County, to Avon Lake, which is located in northern Lorain County. The Ohio Power Siting Board did not approve the pipeline project earlier this year. For now, NRG is tabling the pipeline project and will focus on cleaning up its coal-fired boilers.
