Shale industry has a place in Ohio and surrouding region

Crain’s Cleveland says that even in the current downturn of low prices and production, the shale industry has a future in Ohio and neighboring states.

Nationally, there is a glut of ethane, but in the Utica Shale, an ethane cracker would reduce the amount of ethane currently being rejected. Ethane crackers “crack” ethane to produce ethylene, which is a feedstock for polyethylene and plastics.

Several ethane crackers have been proposed in the region, including the locations of Beaver County, Pennsylvania, Parkersburg, West Virginia, Belmont County and Monroe County. At last week’s Tri-State Shale Summit, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia officials met to discuss the future of the region’s shale plays and how they could become ethane processing centers.
