WVU Today reports that the drilling waste, including mud, drill cuttings and water, produced from West Virginia University’s two Marcellus shale research wells is below the federal threshold for radioactive or hazardous wastes.
The research wells, located near Morgantown, are part of the Marcellus Shale Energy and Environment Laboratory project.
Drilling waste are transported on trucks via public roads to landfills, so the WVU study looked at the toxicity and radioactivity of the drilling waste.
